This monument to Solomon Borisovich Ratner stands in the Novodeviche Cemetary in Moscow, accompanied by those to Nikita Kruschev and Raisa Gorbacheva. I first modeled the relief portrait in plastiline from photographs, and made a cement copy of the plastiline. I carved the granite to match using a duplicating machine which followed the contours of the cement copy as it guided a diamond saw cutting the granite. This gave an accurate rough-in which I then finished with hand tools.
